We are so grateful to Lyle and Cathy for the detailed care and professional experience. The time spent with our son to learn critical and life saving skills is beyond wonderful. We feel confident in his ability to drive with care and confidence. Thank you!

Lyle has a gift with new drivers of all types. He's worked with two of my teenagers who have wildly different learning styles and personalities. We will most definitely ask him to help us when our youngest gets her permit as well. In addition to having a very calm approach to ease the most anxious of drivers, he also takes his job of training safe and educated drivers very seriously. They're not interested in getting as many students through as possible and taking short cuts to do it. They want to give their students the tools they need to keep them and others safe on the road. This review is 100 percent backed up by my teenagers who feel they are much better prepared after being trained by Lyle.

The best and most wonderful Driving School in existence! Lyle and Cathy are an amazing team and Lyle is doing God’s work making the roads safer by teaching new drivers how to be safe and drive following all of the rules. I am so grateful that Lyle was my son’s driving instructor! We have noticed the difference, my son is a wonderful driver who now corrects my driving due to Lyle’s superior instruction! I am so grateful and we feel so blessed to have found Lyle, he honestly cares and teaches his students how to be safe drivers. Each student of theirs is paid attention to, and every driving scenario they may encounter is covered! So blessed to have found the Ashburn Driving School!

Mr T taught both of my kids. I like how thorough and deliberate his lessons are. Driving is such a huge milestone. I like knowing that they are learning skills I don’t think to teach.
Gabrielle A., Ashburn https://maps.app.goo.gl/E9h3XbD7XhYRx4zC6
I appreciate all of your help! I have no idea where I would be in my life without you. You made all of this possible, and I cannot thank you enough. I loved how easy it was to follow all of your directions and how pleasant you made the experience. You guys are awesome!
-Hayden A., Ashburn
Very comprehensive driving school! They teach quite a bit more than many of the competitors. Lyle and Cathy have a passion for “graduating” safe drivers and it shows. The cost is a bit higher than other driving schools, but I consider it a good investment. My friend recommended them to me saying her older child did another school and her younger son did this one and between the two, he is the better driver by far.:)
- Elana H., Ashburn https://maps.app.goo.gl/JEhxjFP1zFB3TUBn8
Based on conversations with friends on their experiences with BTW classes, I strongly believe that my children received superior instruction with Mr. T. at Ashburn Driving School. You can find the lesson topics on the website. My children found Mr. T to be friendly and approachable. When I picked them up, they were always happy to share what they had learned and they became more confident drivers with Mr. T's instruction. While Ashburn Driving School BTW classes cost more than other schools we looked into, the quality of instruction was 1000% worth it. They do offer a military discount, which was appreciated. I know my husband and I made the right decision in signing our son and daughter up with Ashburn Driving School. and we know they had the best instruction possible.
- Shannon D., Ashburn https://maps.app.goo.gl/YshJzeerMkMo97yo9
Great experience! We chose this driving school for our 16-year-old son because of all the extra skills they teach. Mr. and Mrs. Tulloch are wonderful people and really worked with our schedules. My son passed the driving exam during the final lesson and now has his temporary license. He drives much more safely now and with a lot more confidence. Now every time he is in the car with me while I am driving, he points out everything I am doing wrong! I’m glad he learned everything the correct way now and will not have to break bad driving habits later in life. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Tulloch!
- V.K. Ashburn https://maps.app.goo.gl/RewhJm6gGFtxWHLV7
We highly recommend Mr.Tulloch as a driving instructor. He is very knowledgeable, experienced, and patient. He explains everything very well and clear that makes a student to fell less stressed and more confident behind the wheel. Our son loves his lessons with Mr.T!
- Maria A., Ashburn https://maps.app.goo.gl/5SZfxHJLFQ3GW8AXA
We had a very positive experience with Mr. T. I felt the instruction was much more thorough and in depth than other driving schools. And my son enjoyed his time driving.
- Dana T., Ashburn https://maps.app.goo.gl/FodEAPico4z63GTU8
BEST driving school EVER! My youngest daughter just completed her course with Mr. T. and is a better driver than I, and I have had my license for 30 years! I HIGHLY recommend this school. She is much more relaxed and confident. I noticed a difference after her second class. I want to send my 19 year old for a refresher. :)
--Ann Marie B., Ashburn https://maps.app.goo.gl/Y7BW15W56FPHP7mm9
We were very happy with Ashburn Driving School--from the first phone call to learn about the programs and pricing, to the final lessons--first rate operation! Our 18-year old son didn't have his license yet; we opted for private lessons first and then the adult driving program. The students don't just drive around--they practice hazards, on/off ramps, and all the complications of driving in Loudoun County. Thanks for the great service!
--Jennifer P., Leesburg
I've been sharing this YouTube channel with everyone I know. I had the joy of talking to one of the owners about their business yesterday. It really makes a difference seeing not only the results of the school but the passion and dedication that each of you put into making such a fine reputable business.
--Travis, YouTube Channel Subscriber
Thanks so much, Cathy! Mr. T. was the topic of conversation at dinner tonight because our daughter was telling her sister how calm he makes his classes and that he never gets stressed out over any situation.
--Christina D., Ashburn
Our son had a great first lesson driving with Mr. Snyder today and is so positive about the experience. Thank you so much! He said that he already learned a lot - and it was great - even though he was driving in the rain.
--Kelli T., Reston
We just completed our third experience with Ashburn Driving School and we have never been more happy with a business than this one. So many driving schools in the area are corrupt--they take your money, take your student for a quick drive, and issue them their license, just to rack up as many students ($$) as possible, and your child/student learns nothing. That is definitely not the case with Ashburn Driving School! Mr. Tulloch is extremely thorough and he takes his job seriously, and we could not be more thankful. By the time our students completed Mr. Tulloch's sessions, they were much more informed and very confident that they could handle any situation they came across on the roads. We all know the Ashburn area is not an easy place to learn to drive, so why would anyone want to take a shortcut with those other driving schools? I mean, you are taking the lives of your children in your hands if you have not prepared them as best you can, and that is why Ashburn Driving School was the only choice for us. Mr. Tulloch really cares about your kids and he wants to see them become good drivers, so he runs them through a battery of tests and lessons such as learning how to evade trouble by taking the car off the road, then getting the car back on the road. No other driving school is this thorough, I can promise you that. We all want our kids to be safe, it is scary enough to be the parents of teen drivers, so it is best to give them the best instruction possible and to our family, there is simply no other choice. Thank you to Lyle and Cathy Tulloch for operating a truly great driving school.

I feel so much safer having learned defensive driving and really learned a lot from Mr. T. He was very patient and an excellent teacher! --Zoe K., Ashburn
Stellar and comprehensive teaching that will leave you more than adequately prepared for driving on your own. They do a great crash avoidance lesson. Mr. T. is very calm, patient, and knowledgeable. Highly recommend.
--Tiegan P., Potomac Falls
Would recommend this driving school to anybody, new to being a driver or just not a very good one! Mr. T. was very patient, clear, taught things generally not taught in basic driving schools, and made the test feel so easy. My parents feel so much better about my driving now since these classes.
--India W., Ashburn
Mr. & Mrs. Tulloch are overwhelmingly kind, patient, knowledgeable, supportive and go above and beyond to help others. Called multiple driving schools, never got service or information like that; above all they were able to connect me to the right entity that could resolve my concerns and followed up with me in case I needed help. Truly, I believe that Ashburn Driving School is the perfect place to learn driving and get detailed information, exceptional service, great communication, high quality, honesty, and huge support...Totally recommend Ashburn Driving School as they go above and beyond!!!
--Youstina Y., Ashburn
Mr. T. was an amazing instructor! I couldn’t ask for a better teacher! Through his lessons I learned to be a better driver and to be careful on the road in many situations. I passed my test thanks to him! --Dakotah B., Lansdowne https://maps.app.goo.gl/G3iqLPcB8rRt8WKCA
Lyle helped all 3 of our kids to understand how to drive and not just the technical rules. Lyle's very engaging and practical approach to teaching not only prepared our kids, but they had fun in the process. As parents we truly appreciate Lyle's work and how he helped prepare our kids for driving!
--Matthew G., Ashburn
Worth every penny. If you actually want to learn how to drive you need to drive with Mr. T. I'd previously put my daughter through TWO driving schools before this but BOTH failed to give my daughter any ACTUAL instruction. However, after just a few lessons with Mr. T., my daughter became confident and knew exactly what she was doing behind the wheel. Mr. T. was thorough in his instruction, relaxed so students didn't get nervous, and he gave each student ample time on the road. He has gone above and beyond as an instructor. In many instances he has even gone over the time we paid for just to give my daughter extra practice with parking, etc. He is the best driving instructor you will find. He genuinely cares about his students and dedicates himself to ensuring they know how to drive safely.
--Simin H., Ashburn https://maps.app.goo.gl/QzXwAUz52dfYYrDB8
Mr. Tulloch is an amazing and patient instructor. He taught my daughter and niece together. Both girls were extremely nervous, but by the time the first lesson was over both were feeling so much more confident. They looked forward to every lesson and have remarked that Mr. Lyle was their favorite teacher ever out of every subject. As a parent, I appreciated his flexibility and kindness in teaching my daughter. She was excited to learn with him and looked forward to the many things they covered in every lesson. I highly recommend Ashburn Driving School.
--Angela T. , Ashburn
Hi Cathy, Thank you so much for your call and for the email. We have watched some of the videos of your husband, and we're very impressed by his level of explanation and teaching style (I actually learned some things myself!). We also appreciate his calm and patient manner. I think our son would really respond well to his methods.
--Tina K., Ashburn
Our daughter drove alone for the first time today [after having received her license from Mr. Tulloch]. She said she was very nervous, and then all of a sudden she saw Mr. Tulloch drive by, and she got a sense of calm. Just wanted to send another thank you for all you do and all you do without even knowing.
--Jen H., Ashburn
Stop searching, you have found the best in the business! Mr. Tulloch taught our first son how to drive two years ago, and he benefited greatly from Mr. Tulloch's calm, reassuring demeanor. He was taught many defensive driving techniques and how to stay safe on the road. Two years later, our son is an excellent driver with an impeccable driving record! I was searching for Mr. Tulloch for our second son who will now be fortunate to learn with Ashburn Driving School! --Jovana P., Ashburn
I could not be happier with my experience with Lyle and Ashburn Driving School. I hired him to do a series of private lessons and behind the wheel with my son. He is thorough, honest, patient, and was truly committed to preparing my son for one of the most important responsibilities there is. He is a pleasure to work with and gave my son many tools and tricks that I was not in a position to provide. He is a true professional and I highly recommend him.
-- Jane J., Leesburg
Lyle is the best. Two of my children have received their licenses through Ashburn Driving School and my husband and I are much more assured of their safety because of it. When our older children took similar classes, we never got the impression that either instructor took the obligation seriously. Lyle wants the teens to be safe and responsible drivers for everyone's safety. I truly think that insurance companies should offer discounts to those who have completed their driver's training through Ashburn Driving School. It's that good!
--Barbara C., Ashburn
I was looking for a trustworthy and reputable instructor to prepare my daughter for the driving test. She took the requisite driving course in high school and we drove together for many hours. Not being an instructor, I wanted someone to assess her driving skill and knowledge to cover areas I missed. After numerous futile attempts contacting other driving schools, I came across Ashburn Driving School and immediately received the care and attention I was searching for. Most refreshing was their attention to the training my daughter needed vs. trying to sign her up for a specific program. She only received the training she needed (3 lessons) and passed the driving test the same day she received her 3rd and last training lesson. My daughter found Lyle's approach to training to be very thorough and unintimidating. I highly recommend Ashburn Driving School to others.
--Jim F., Ashburn
Mr. Tulloch was EVERYTHING we had been looking for to guide our daughter through the required driver training. Our area is already rather intimidating for many drivers, especially new and young drivers. Mr. Tulloch's thorough program and first-hand training was so valuable and it absolutely prepared our daughter to drive the area roadways. His method was professional, relaxing and confident! I can almost guarantee there is NO OTHER DRIVING SCHOOL that gives the caring attention Mr. Tulloch and his Ashburn Driving School gives to prepare our precious children for driving these challenging roads! We now have the confidence from having our daughter go through the course that she will be much better prepared for any situation while driving. Thank you sincerely, Mr. Tulloch and Ashburn Driving School! TOP NOTCH! --Steve and Debbi B., Ashburn
I write very few online reviews, but Ashburn Driving School warrants it. Our son just completed his training with Lyle, the owner. They were so professional, and so thorough. Our older son went through a different school he had found 4 years ago, and I don't think I ever met the owner/instructor. Lyle came to our home two weeks before our son was scheduled for his Behind the Wheel. He went over the entire process, and what was expected. He showed up on time for every behind-the-wheel. At the end of it, he held him to a 50-point, DMV required test. Following that, we had another follow-up meeting where he reviewed our son's progress throughout the 7 day instruction, in every area of driving, on a worksheet the DMV legally requires him to keep. He informed us of all areas he needs to improve. He walked us through the rest of the process, and told us to contact them if we don't receive the court date within 5 months for our son to get his permanent license. Every step of this process was impeccable. It was important to us to have an instructor that would only grant him his license if he was ready and officially passed the driving portion of the test. There are too many bad, distracted, reckless, and aggressive drivers around here, constantly running lights, speeding, and on their phones. Having a legitimate instructor was important to us, as we have heard so many stories of other instructors taking the money, not doing all 7 Behind-the-Wheel lessons, not testing them, not checking the logs...inexperienced drivers pose a risk to all of us, and I wasn't prepared to put our son on the road if he poses a risk to himself or others. Ashburn Driving School is exceptional, and I strongly recommend them to any family who wants to truly prepare their kids.
--Marissa L., Ashburn
I heard many stories of friends' children doing 2-3 lessons and then being handed their temp license as they were *ready*. I knew we wanted the full lessons we were paying for and to know that our daughter was getting the instruction that she needed. Mr. Tulloch meets the family first (don't you want to know who you are sending your child out with?) and walks you through every step. The sessions included off-road, defensive, etc., and she was always with the same student so she could observe his efforts. We feel it prepared her very well and there was NO cutting of corners. He does it right.
---Lisa M., Ashburn
Why do you differentiate between "driving" and "road navigation"?
It's because anyone can turn on the ignition, steer the wheel, press the accelerator, and they are "driving," that is, moving a multiple-thousand-pound vehicle from Point A to Point B.
On the other hand, only a person who is mature, intelligent, educated, well prepared, knowledgeable, self-controlled, responsible, conscientious, and finally and most importantly, fully trained inside the vehicle by a talented, skilled, professional instructor, can "navigate," that is, safely and successfully maneuver a multiple-thousand-pound vehicle from one destination to another and be able to repeat that process without incident in different scenarios day after day, year after year, hopefully for multiple decades.
Therefore, we consider passing on the skills and knowledge related to successful road navigation to be the purpose and mission of every lesson we provide, and thus almost without exception, the students we launch have invariably earned the title of Road Navigator. We're proud to name them as such, and we know they too are proud to take on the responsibilities related to the bearing of that title and the completion of the mission attached to it, which is Driving to Save Lives.

What behind-the-wheel maneuvers do you teach to introduce the student to real-life scenarios?
The Ashburn Driving School provides its students with professional defensive-driver skills and maneuvers that cover real-life driving situations. Our purpose is to provide a fully rounded, complete instructional experience for each of our students, and so we take nothing for granted as we cover the skills, maneuvers, and details that we believe are essential for all drivers--and especially new ones--who are navigating the roadways of Northern Virginia.
To us, these skills and the knowledge of these maneuvers are non-negotiable. We live in Loudoun County where there are countless two-lane highways that are frequented constantly by gravel and recycling trucks, construction vehicles, delivery trucks, flatbed trucks, and high-speed rescue vehicles.
We want our students to be as comfortable and successful negotiating the roadways skillfully whether they are encountering ordinary day-to-day traffic patterns or these immense vehicles.
Here are some examples of what we teach in detail:
--Off-road recovery: when a student is driving on a two-lane road and may veer closer to the right side of the lane and suddenly find his two passenger-side tires caught off the road in the gravel, the grass, or a ditch.
Now he has to pull the car back up and over the ledge of the road by turning the steering wheel to the left, but the danger is in over-correcting--pulling the vehicle too far to the left--and entering the lane of oncoming traffic.
Therefore, we teach off-road recovery so that our students have the knowledge and experience to calmly and effectively bring their vehicle back up onto the roadway and, holding the steering wheel firmly, proceed steadily forward.
--Another major skill we provide--and exclusively as far as we know--
is our driver obstacle course. By swerving and skidding through strategically-placed cones, our students are taught how to handle an unforeseen event, such as hitting a patch of ice, without losing control.
--We also cover emergency braking, also called stopping on a dime, which is an essential skill for every driver but often taken for granted when instructors assume a student will know how to stop in an instant. Many students are apprehensive about pressing firmly on the brake at a split-second's notice--for example if a cyclist were to suddenly enter the roadway--so this skill should be taught as we teach it, purposefully and directly.
--There are innumerable further maneuvers and skills that we teach, and many of them listed on this website under the What We Teach tab.
--We also have instructors who consider it their honor and duty to be comprehensive, focused, and detailed in their professional instruction. To them, providing professional driver education is not only a rewarding civic duty, it is above all a mission and a passion to see a student gain skills that can reward him or her with safety and success on the road for a lifetime.
************************************************************************
Is there a way that new student drivers can be safer while practicing with their parents?
Yes, we recommend using a Co-Pilot Brake called the Controller(tm),
which attaches to and detaches from the vehicle's brake pedal in seconds;

Is there a way to decide how many private lesson we'll need?
The number of lessons you decide to register for is left up to you, but there are some guidelines we use to help you, and these would be related to your current level of experience, whether you have driven much or have never driven at all, for example, and also whether you're familiar with American road navigation just as a passenger, or if you've only recently begun living here and are coming from another country where the rules of the road differ, such as if you're coming from a country where you would be driving on the opposite side of the road. Therefore you're welcome to take just one lesson, or one lesson at a time, or multiple lessons, or ongoing lessons. For beginners, we generally recommend a start of about five lessons but offer the assurance that there is tremendous value in even one lesson, and a student should look forward to learning and seeing a difference after that one lesson.
Above all, our goal is to launch you as an adept, experienced, knowledgeable, and safe road navigator who is ready and able to handle any given driving situation in a professional and successful manner. That said, driving and road navigational skills are such that no one can consider the learning process as "finished" since every driving situation is a different scenario, and as with many other facets of life such as sports, for example, we say that we are only as good a driver as demonstrated during our last drive. This means that we must never relax our vigilance when behind the wheel, and thus taking multiple or ongoing lessons is similar to joining a gym or taking music lessons: the student realizes that this is a skill which can always be honed or made more perfect, and students who invest in any lessons and certainly multiple and ongoing lessons understand the benefits resulting from mastering their road navigational skills.
************************************************************************
Is there a waiting period before we can start lessons?
Our usual wait period is one to three weeks depending upon
the student's and the instructor's availability, we do require that once registered,
you would generally allow for a one- to six-week or longer wait-time parameter especially
during heavily scheduled times such as spring and summer. Please register
only if you are able to account for these potential wait times. Also, the more
available the student is, the easier it is to schedule him or her and the shorter
the wait time would be.
Registering in advance of when the student would
like to take lessons is always recommended but not required. Also, once registered,
there is always the possibility that you will be scheduled immediately if another student postpones his or her lessons; this is because when openings arise, we offer those openings first to students who are already registered in our queue.
************************************************************************
Do registered lessons ever expire?
Lesson registrations never expire; many students register well in advance of when they intend to take lessons so that they will have the first choice of the dates and times they prefer, so there is no time limit on how early a student can register. Other students register and intend to take lessons at a certain time but then decide to move that timing to later in the year or even to a subsequent year, for example if they are studying abroad. These registered lessons will remain in our system until the time that the student is ready; students need only call us and give us their names and pertinent information; we'll confirm their lessons in our system and then schedule them according to their current availability.
************************************************************************
Do you have a refund policy?
Yes, we do: we provide refund for ongoing student illness, student relocation, or a request made within twenty-four hours from the time the student registration intake form is emailed, issued electronically during the first week of the month following the request. Beyond that, we have a no-refund policy but will hold any unused lessons as non-expiring, fully transferable credit equal to the value of those lessons, in the student’s name
************************************************************************
Are registered lessons transferable from one student to another student?
Yes, they are. If one student registers for lessons and then finds for any reason that he or she is not able to use those lessons (for example when an over-18 student decides to take the DMV road test and passes it after taking fewer lessons than he or she had registered for), the remaining lessons are fully transferable to anyone else whom that student may designate. That may be a family member or a friend or the student has the option of adding that lesson to our scholarship fund which serves students who are unable to pay for lessons. Agove all, those lessons are registered in the original student's name and will remain active until that student either uses the lessons or transfers them to another student or donates them to our scholarship fund.
************************************************************************
Do you offer partial and/or full scholarships for lessons?
Yes, we do; we never turn away students for financial reasons and instead make scholarships available to those who are not able to pay. If you would like to apply for a scholarship, please email us at AshburnDrivingSchool@comcast.net and let us know that you're facing financial hardship and are unable to pay for lessons; we do not require financial documentation, only a note explaining your general situation and a phone call. We'll review your request and be happy to provide either a partial or a full scholarship.
************************************************************************
May we donate to your scholarship fund?
Yes, you may. Simply call or email us or use our portal with the designation in the Notes section that you're providing a scholarship amount, and we'll reach out to you to thank you and to record any details such as a student whom you'd like the scholarship to be directed towards. Unused registered lessons are also always able to be donated towards our scholarship fund for use by students who are not able to afford our services. As noted, you would simply need to let us know that you'd like to transfer any unused lesson value as a scholarship fund donation. Please note that Ashburn Driving School LLC is not a 501(c)(3) organization, and thus your donation is not tax deductible; nevertheless, your donation will be greatly appreciated by those to whom it will be applied.
